The Doctoral School

The Society, Politics, Public Health Doctoral School (ED SP2) is one of the eight Doctoral Schools (EDs) attached to the University of Bordeaux Graduate Research School.

ED SP2 is a transdisciplinary doctoral school created in 2011.

It covers three major subject fields: Biology, Medicine and Health; Human sciences and humanities (area of new humanities); Sciences of society.

Its aim is to consolidate existing links between social sciences, political science, human sciences and public health and to promote structural and innovative transversal projects.

Key figures:  330 PhD students - 170/180 HDR (with authorization to supervise research) - 10/20 ADT (with authorization to supervise a thesis)

Missions and priorities

The Doctoral School provides:

  • training for PhD students and prepares them for their future careers after their doctoral training
  • information for students on conditions of admission, skills required, funding available, the nature, quality and rates of employment that can be expected after obtaining the doctorate
  • implementation of a PhD student selection policy based on explicit and publicly available criteria
  • provision of vocational training modules, promoting interdisciplinarity and including an introduction to research ethics and scientific integrity
  • organization of assessment systems for courses and training modules, through regular surveys
  • compliance with the doctoral charter of the institution, appended to these statutes
  • help to obtain funding for PhD students to prepare their thesis and present it in the best possible conditions
  • organization of scientific discussion between PhD students and the scientific community
  • a quality assurance system monitoring the specific support provided to PhD students (annual monitoring from the end of year 1 of the thesis: PhD student activity report, interview with individual monitoring committee)
  • follow-up of professional career after obtaining the doctorate
